What inspired you to become a doctor?

When I was in high school, I took a class in physiology and learned some interesting facts about how the human body works; my teacher  noted my interest and encouraged me to pursue pre-medicine in college with a biology degree.  From that early interest, it was a natural pathway to choosing a career in medicine.

Do you have children? If so, how have they impacted your career?
My wife and I have raised three children to adulthood.  Being a parent has afforded me insight into the joys and struggles which the parents of my patients face.  My children experienced childhood illnesses, school problems, and sports injuries; my experiences as  a parent have helped me to be a more empathetic doctor.

What is the most gratifying part of your job?
There are many, many gratifying aspects to my vocation, and I never regret being a pediatrician.  I have been a physician in this community for over  twenty years and one of the most gratifying aspects of my job is remembering newborns who faced many medical complexities at birth yet have grown into young adults with many gifts and talents.  Being a part of the life journey of these young people is one of the most special gifts of my profession.

Why did you choose pediatrics as a specialty?
I grew up in a family with seven children.  From the earliest days of my medical career,  I seemed to have a strong connection to younger patients; I felt the care which I could give them and their families was very rewarding and that led to my choice of pediatrics as a specialty.
